Terms of Consent - Nova Scotia
Please review these terms of consent for participating in our SmartParent text-message prenatal and parenting education program.
By enrolling in SmartParent you:
- Agree and consent to receive text messages from SmartParent.
- Acknowledge the right to discontinue your enrollment in SmartParent at any time without giving a reason and without any negative impact on you. You can discontinue receiving text messages from SmartParent by texting “STOP" to the sender (12323) or by cancelling via the website portal.
- Accept that SmartParent will not provide you with any personalized medical advice with regard to your or your child’s individual circumstances and/or your or your child’s medical condition.
- Accept that, although SmartParent will not charge you to sign up or to receive the text messages, standard message and data rates may apply. This means that you may be charged by your mobile phone service provider (e.g. Bell, Rogers, Telus, etc.) for receiving/sending SmartParent text messages and/or browsing links included in the text messages, depending on the type of phone plan you are currently on.
- Acknowledge that any information you provide in the surveys will be kept confidential.
- Acknowledge that only SmartParent and our technology provider, Memotext, will have access to your data and survey answers. Survey data provided to your provincial / territorial health unit for analysis will not be linked to your phone number.
- Confirm that you have had the opportunity to ask questions and have had your questions answered to your satisfaction.
Personal Information
Personal information is information we hold which is identifiable as being about you.
Our collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information is regulated by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (Canada), or similar privacy legislation applicable in your Province, as amended from time to time. You can find more information about your privacy rights at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC).
We collect information from you when you enroll in the program including:
- Your cell phone number
- Pregnancy due date
- Your baby’s birth date
We will also ask you to complete surveys to help us learn who is using the program, the impact of the program on behaviour choices and health outcomes, and how we can improve the program. You are not required to answer any questions. Your confidentiality is respected at all times: no information that discloses your identity will be published or shared with anyone. Information collected in the surveys includes:
- First 3 digits of your postal code
- Your baby’s birth date
Your data are held by SmartParent and by our technology partner, Memotext. Data are stored on secure servers located in Canada, in password-protected files. Data are shared with your local health authority, but without any personal identifiers, including your cell phone number or birth date.

Security
While no service is completely secure, we take all reasonable measures to protect information about you against unauthorized access, use, alteration, or destruction.
Requesting access or correcting your personal information
Subject to applicable local laws and regulations, you may have some or all the following rights with respect to your personal data:
- to request access to your personal data and to rectify any inaccuracies within that personal data;
- to request the erasure of your personal data residing with us;
- to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal data.
If you wish to contact us to with a request relating to personal information we hold about you, please contact us using the contact details set out below including your name and contact details. We may need to verify your identity before providing you with your personal information. We will deal with all requests for access to personal information within a reasonable timeframe.
